Reading Circle

Originally posted on Wednesday, February 15, 2012

When the goings get tough, the tough gets... reading!  Boy howdy do you all love books.  There are days this winter that your father and I rarely know what to do with you all... and we are loath to turn to the TV babysitter more then necessary.  (Don’t get me wrong, there is no parental self righteous behavior here... we have turned unabashedly to Thomas, Sesame Street, Angelina Ballerina and Sean the Sheep in an effort to get... anything done.
But if just one of your parental units is occupied, the absolute, guaranteed to occupy all four of you activity is a story.  Lots of stories to be exact.  The more the better.  You don’t care if it’s one you’ve heard thousands of times... in fact you prefer it.
Your favorites continue to be the Boynton Books.  You will come swarming from various parts of the home if the opening strains of snuggle puppy are heard.  I barely finish uttering:  “this tiny hippopotamus has something small to say...” before:  thud, thud thud...(back that thang up, Jack and settle in on the lap) thud... all chicks are present and accounted for.  Moo, Baa, La La La?  The boys can practically ask for that one by name.
“buh-uk?...boo-uk?” You hand me story after story.  After a bit we may move into some picture books:  The Bear Snores On, Farmyard Beat, Who Wants A Dragon?  It is such a warm feeling having you all tucked in around us.  Hearing your little voices chime in on key phrases, seeing your chubby hands reach out to turn the pages.
Your father and I hope that your love of reading will continue, and we pray that these moments are enough to counteract Thomas the Tank Engine and his inexplicable hold over us all.
